Taranto’s Gold Tour: 4 nights, 5 days
You will be based in Taranto at the hotel Akropolis and from here you will visit some of the most beautiful locations in Puglia and in Matera. Day 1 Taranto – Aragonese Castle
On your first day you will arrive at the airport, where a driver will welcome you and take you to Taranto. You check into the hotel Akropolis and have the possibility to visit the Aragonese Castle of Taranto.
Day 2 Taranto – Archaeological Museum MARTA & important sights
On your second day you will visit the National Archaeological Museum of Taranto rich with collections of great historical importance: the Ori di Taranto, a collection of gold objéts d’art, absolutely worth seeing. You will also explore the old town of Taranto with its churches and noble palaces. Thus you’ll get to know the fascinating diversity of Taranto’s architectural styles, which are the result of the numerous invasions suffered by the city throughout its history.
Day 3 Martina Franca and Grottaglie
Baroque architecture in Martina Franca and ceramics’ workshops in Grottaglie
After breakfast a private transfer will take you to the baroque city Martina Franca and your English speaking tour guide will share some interesting information about Martina Franca’s baroque architecture as well as its culinary delights with you. You will see the seventeenth century Palazzo Ducale and a majestic church, the Basilica di San Martino, dedicated to Martina Franca’s patron saint. After the visit of the city you might stop at a local shop for a tasting of Puglian specialties such as mozzarella cheese and Martina Franca’s “Capocollo” (capo = head, collo =neck). As every day, there is some free time for lunch and your tour guide will be happy to suggest a good restaurant. Then you will go on to Grottaglie. One of the highlights there is a visit of the Quartiere delle Ceramiche, because there are more than 50 workshops, where craftsmen make ceramic vases, figurines and jars. You can admire the beautiful pottery in colourful designs in the workshps of the craftsmen, where you can choose and buy beautiful souvenirs. Pottery in Grottaglie looks back on a long tradition. In former times craftsmen worked in the Grottoes of the Gravina di San Giorgio. Worth a visit are also Grottaglie’s Castello Episcopolo, the Castle of the Archbishop that was built in 1388, its Chiesa Matrice, the Chiesa del Carmine with its beautiful stone crib and the frescos of the cloister of San Francesco da Paola
Day 4 Matera and Altamura
Unesco world heritage site Matera and authentic Altamura
After breakfast your driver will take you to Matera, the cave city. It is one of the UNESCO heritage sites and was described as the most outstanding, intact example of a troglodyte settlement in the Mediterranean region, perfectly adapted to its terrain and ecosystem”. Matera was chosen as a film location for Ben Hur and Mel Gibson’s the Passion of the Christ for it has conserved a timeless beauty. There will be some free time for lunch and your tour guide will be happy to recommend you a good restaurant. From Matera you will go to Altamura. A guided tour will show you its authentic historic quarter with its Romanesque-Gothic cathedral, a church that was built by Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II and the Church S. Nicola dei Greci with its characteristic alleyways or “claustri”, distinctive to Altamura. They usually end in small courtyards. Altamura is famous for its bread and of course you will visit a bakery and taste the Pane di Altamura DOP and other specialties such as the liquor “Don Peppe” and some sweet treats of the Monastery of Saint Clare.
